Abstract:
Social Media is an ever-growing topic surrounding many areas in the workplace
and in our daily lives. This conceptual literature review focuses on how social media has
changed the workforce in recruitment and selection, specifically in relation to the two
major social media sites of Facebook and LinkedIn. The use of social media has its
positives or drawbacks for both Human Resource professionals and job seekers. Social
media has also blurred the lines on what and how it is used in the practices of recruiting
and hiring posing legal risks for employers. No research has surfaced verifying that social
media holds any validity or significant data in providing true job relevant information to
help organizations hire worthy employees. Older generations have more concerns and
negative views towards the use of social media in recruitment compared to the younger
generations who have developed alongside technological advances. There are many
different avenues and topics future researchers can take to advance the studies and
information we have on social media in the workplace.
